Retention Protocol

Retaining an orthodontic result is as important as the active(braces) phase of treatment. Undesirable changes associated with settling of the dentition and the aging of the occlusion and jaws can be prevented or minimized by following a life long retention protocol.

  • Following the removal of your braces, wear the retainers 24 hours per day for 1-3 months. Only remove the retainers while brushing your teeth and eating.
  • After 1-3 months, wear the retainers during quiet time and while sleeping for six months. Following the latter wear the retainers only while sleeping for 18 months prior to initiating the life long maintenance program.
  • The life-long retention protocol:
    • Store your retainers by your tooth brushing area. Try in your retainers 2-7 times per week to make sure they fit properly. If you observe undesirable changes in the alignment of your teeth, wear the retainers 24 hours per day until the dentition is re-aligned then proceed with the retention protocol.
    • An alternative to the above is to wear the retainers only while sleeping. If you observe any undesirable change, wear the retainers as state above.
  • When the retainers are not in your mouth, they are to be stored in their case. Never place the retainers on food tray, in your pocket, or wrapped in a napkin/tissue. There is a possibility you may accidentally break or misplace your retainers. Place a label on the case with your name, address, and telephone number.
  • Clean your retainers with a tooth brush and tooth paste. For deep cleaning periodically soak your retainers in Efferdent. DO NOT USE WARM WATER.
  • If you damage or misplace your retainers, immediately contact our office to have new retainers fabricated.
